Elder William Edward Frierson, affectionately known as “Billy”, passed away at his home on February 26, 2025. He was born on January 17,1952, in Bishopville, South Carolina, and the first-born son of the late Willie James and Ada Belle Frierson. William grew up in the Blue Pond neighborhood of Bishopville, where he developed a love for sports. He played football and baseball at Dennis High School. His passion for learning and leadership led him to graduate from Fort Valley State University in 1973 with a degree in Business Administration.
William was a spiritual person and served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher at Cousar Memorial Presbyterian Church. Throughout his life, William made a significant and lasting impact on the lives of many through his work in life insurance, including NC Mutual and Life of Georgia. He continued his service with Wateree Community Actions, Lee County Government, SC Department of Transportation, Pee Dee RTA and the Lee County Council on Aging. He also volunteered at the Bishopville Parks and Recreation as a coach. He is notably recognized for his dedication to education and his community, having served as the chair of the Lee County School Board during a pivotal moment in the community’s history—the successful passing of the bond referendum for a new high school building in 1994.
William is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, James Ray Frierson and Larry Frierson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Patricia Franklin Frierson; four sons, Kevin Robinson, Derrick (Gloria) Stuckey, Sterling Frierson, and William Gerard (Brittany) Frierson; two daughters, Trellis Frierson and Patrice Frierson; two brothers, Omega (Karen) Wilson and Willis “Benji” Frierson (missing); one sister, Dr. Vanessa (Leslie) Bradley; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four aunts and three uncles and a host of loved ones and friends, all of whom were dear to his heart. A devoted family man, William’s passing is felt deeply by all who knew him. His kind spirit, tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment to his community will be remembered by all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday March 6, 2025 at 11:00 am at Cousar Memorial Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough, Sr. will officiate and the committal will be at the St. John Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville. Family and friends may pay their respect on Wednesday March 5 from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at the funeral home. A repast will follow at the Chappell Park Gymnasium. Rest in peace, Billy. Your memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved you.
