It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our beloved United States Veterans, Mr. Richard Eugene Zaretzka.  Mr. Zaretzka, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 1st, 2025, while surrounded by his family at Carolina Pines RMC.

Mr. Zaretzka was born in Visalia, CA, and proudly served our country in the United States Navy for 20+ years. Following his service to our country, Richard served as Chief of Security at the San Diego Zoo for 18 years, which was a position he thoroughly enjoyed. When he finally retired, he enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Charlotte, and they settled down in McBee, SC from San Diego, CA in 1991. During retirement, some of Richard’s greatest joys were riding his tractor, working in the garden, and teaching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved seeing them getting their hands dirty and growing a garden. Following the passing of his wife, Charlotte, in 1997, he resumed traveling and exploring again. Over the years, he was blessed to find his companion, Mary Bush, and they enjoyed much time traveling together.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his children: Phyllis (Ken) Cogley, David Zaretzka, Michael Zaretzka, Steven (Cindy) Zaretzka; grandchildren: Kimberly (Paul) Fiskratti, Dawn (David Dayton) Mosqueda, Amy (Chris) Milligan, Jason (Kelsey) Mosqueda, Angela Zaretzka; great-grandchildren: CJ Milligan, Alexis Milligan, Jacob Fiskratti, Colton Bennett, Harper Demby, Knox Mosqueda; and a sister, Beverly Howard Barney.

He was preceded death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Charlotte; parents; and 2 siblings.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center for their care, compassion, and support throughout Mr. Zaretzka’s short illness. The family would also like to express a special THANK YOU to Dr. Martin and Dr. A.

To honor Richard’s memory, the family will hold a private service with full military honors rendered by the United States Navy.

Norton Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to be serving the Zaretzka family.
