Paul Herbert Townsend FORMERLY OF DEXTER, N.Y. Paul Herbert Townsend, 75, of Ackerman Drive, Hartsville, S.C., passed away Wednesday, March 19, at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy and heroic battle with cancer. Born January 6, 1939, in Watertown, a son of the late Charles and Alyettia Townsend, Paul graduated in 1956 from Dexter High School. After graduation, he attended Dexter High School for a year of Post-Graduate education. Paul then went to work for the New York State Department of Public Works (later renamed the NYS Department of Transportation) as an Engineering Aide in the Construction Division. Paul advanced through the Department to eventually become a Civil Engineer in the Planning Division. He retired from the Department in 1995 after over 37 years of service. Paul was married October 24, 1959, in the Dexter Methodist Church by Reverend Spears, to his lifelong sweetheart Verna A. Moulton of Limerick. Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Paul was an extremely avid outdoorsman and particularly enjoyed waterfowl hunting. He enjoyed many mornings in the marsh with his friends and sons. He was always willing to share his hunting knowledge to young hunters so that they could better enjoy the outdoors including volunteering as an instructor for the Hunter Safety Program. He enjoyed playing golf at various courses around the Watertown area. He had the thrill of notching two holes-in-one, one each at Watertown Golf Club and at the Rustic Golf and Country Club. He was an accomplished bowler at Pla-Mor lanes for years as well as a mentor for the Youth Bowling Program with his wife Verna. He reached the pinnacle of bowling skill with a 300 game. Each Sunday, Paul also enjoyed watching his beloved Jimmy Johnson race as well as root for the Buffalo Bills. Paul was especially proud of his two cats, Trouble and Buffy. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Verna A. Townsend; his loving son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cheryl Townsend of Dexter, his loving daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Keith Pittner of Hartsville, S.C., his loving son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Alicia Townsend of Brewerton, his loving son, Timothy Townsend of Myrtle Beach, S.C., his loving son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Melissa Townsend of Dexter, as well as 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. There will be no calling hours or funeral service.
