Olin H Griggs

Hartsville, S.C. Olin Hewitt Griggs, age 86, went to his Heavenly Home on March 18, 2023 while at McLeod RMC. Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 22 at 11:00 am at the Kelleytown Baptist Church. Dr. Michael Madaris, Rev. Rod Elliott and Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Kelleytown Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-7 pm at the funeral home.

Olin was born in Patrick, a son of the late William Henry Griggs and Jessie Viola Gainey Griggs. He married his bride, Miriam, in 1959 and enjoyed over 50 joyful years of marriage with her. He retired from Sonoco Products Company after 38 years of service, and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He loved playing golf and having breakfast with his Carolina Lunch friends. Olin was a devoted member of the Kelleytown Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School and was a key member of the Brotherhood. A devoted husband and father, he made many trips all over the world visiting his son Kevin on his Army adventures. Olin was an Army Veteran and served in the Army Signal Corps decades before his son. He will always have bragging rights on Kevin since he beat him the last time they golfed together. Olin was an avid Gamecock Fan.

Left to cherish his memory is one son, Kevin L. Griggs, Southern Pines, N.C.; one brother, Lavern Griggs, Hartsville; two sisters, Beulah Chapman, Hartsville and Helen Byrd, Hartsville; one sister in Law, Janelle (Walter) Britt, Hartsville and one brother in law, Wilson Griggs, Hartsville; and a great number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Miriam Teal Griggs who was the love of his life; six brothers, Horace, Howard, James, David, Ray and Raymond; two sisters, Letha Barnhill and Carrie Akins.

Memorials may be made to the Kelleytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kelleytown Road, Hartsville, S.C. 29550 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stone Mark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.
