Mrs. Mary “Iva” Lovelace Sowell, 90, of Hartsville, wife of the late Rev. Paul L. Sowell, went home to be with The Lord on Sunday morning, June 25th, 2017, at Carolina Pines surrounded by her family.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in McBee Baptist Church. Reverend Richard Clark will officiate with burial following in McBee Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Tuesday evening, from 5-7 p.m. at Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sowell was born in York County, a daughter of the late Asa Dow & Lillie Dover Lovelace. She graduated from the York County Hospital School of Nursing which was in conjunction with Winthrop College as a cadet nurse. She did post graduate work in nursing at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was a member of the South Carolina Nurses Association, North Carolina Nursing Association, and South Carolina Industrial Nurses Association of which she served on the board. She was employed by several hospitals in North and South Carolina. She retired as Industrial Nurse from Sara Lee Hosiery of Hartsville. She was a loving and giving person. She dearly loved her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and the apple of her eye, her grandson. She was active in all the churches that her husband pastured. She served as Sunday School Teacher, Training Union Director, Choir Director, Acteens Director, and President of Minister Wives Union of the Welsh Neck Association. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Surviving are her daughter, Paula Grooms and husband, Hoby of Hartsville; grandson, Curtis Grooms, Jr. of Matthews, NC; sisters: Markie Miller, Carolyn Lankford, and Rhea Jones; brothers: J.G. Lovelace, Billy Lovelace, and Perry Lovelace.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters, Millie Bunch and Mae Hilderbrand; brothers, Asa D. Lovelace and Tommy Lovelace.
