It is with great sadness that the Freeman family announces the passing of their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Cox Freeman.
Mrs. Freeman, 60, of Bluffton, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on Thursday, May 30th, 2024, at her home in Bluffton with family and friends at her side.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 on Monday afternoon, June 3rd, 2024, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Hartsville Ward. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery and the family will receive friends one hour prior at the church.
Margaret was born in Hartsville, South Carolina on July 9th, 1963, the youngest of four children of the late James C. Cox, Sr. and Frances Melton Cox.
Margaret retired from Sneed Middle School in Florence, South Carolina after 29 years of service in the teaching profession. She graduated from Thomas Hart Academy in May of 1981. She attended Furman University before transferring to finish her BA Degree in English and her Master of Education Degree at Francis Marion University. Margaret began her teaching career in Darlington at St. John’s High School. She taught Honors English there and continued with the merger of St. John’s and Mayo, which became Darlington High School. Margaret transferred to Hartsville Middle School where she taught 8th grade Honors English. She completed her last four years of teaching at Sneed Middle School in Florence, teaching 8th grade Honors English. Margaret loved her students and loved the art of teaching. She coached the cheerleaders for several years at St. John’s High and was the BETA Club sponsor at Hartsville Junior High/Middle School.
Margaret was an avid reader and enjoyed working with the public. She worked with Byerly Park as a score keeper supervisor for softball and baseball, as well as Piratesville Splashpad. She always had a smile on her face and loved meeting new people.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years and 6 months, William Glenn “Buster” Freeman, Jr. of Bluffton, SC; children, Rebekah F. (Andy) Thompson of Bluffton, SC and Jacob Bradley (Kara) Freeman of Little River, SC; a brother, James C. (Pam) Cox, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; two sisters, Sandra C. (Larry) Crockett of Cross Plains, TX and Suzan Poole of Irmo, SC; grandchildren, Miles Coker Freeman and Kearce Andrew Thompson; along with numerous nephews and nieces.
A special thanks to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and the nurses for their tireless service. The family would especially like to thank Madison Shelton, our neighbor and nurse for the love she showed in her care of Margaret.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer at komen.org.
