Kathleen Ann Hopkins

We are honored to publish Mrs. Hopkins obituary for local family and friends.

Kathleen Ann Berry Hopkins, 71, died on Saturday, June 1, 2024, after an extended illness. Born in Sidney, Nebraska, she was the daughter of the late Anthon and Dorothy Berry. A private burial service will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the home of Kathy and Wayne Hopkins, 1401 Georgian Drive, Hartsville, SC, on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Kathy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Wayne Hopkins, and by her sister, Toni Fringer, and her brother, Rod Berry. Kathy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kim Newsome (Billy) of Columbia, SC; son, Craig Hopkins, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four granddaughters Ann Newsome, Emily Newsome, Mckenzie Hopkins and Sydney Hopkins; sisters Connie Berry and Carol Berry, brother Darrell Berry, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Kathy grew up in rural Nebraska where she attended grade school, worked in her family’s diner and enjoyed barrel racing. She moved to the beaches of California for her middle school and high school years, before she met a handsome young airman at Vandenburg Air Force Base who swept her off her feet. That airman was from Bishopville, South Carolina and convinced her to travel with him across country to raise their family.

Kathy believed in hard work and she was proud of her 30+ years of service at Sonoco Products Company. She was fiercely devoted to her family. When she wasn’t working, she wanted nothing more than to spend time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Kathy knew without doubt that the United States of America was the greatest country in the world and would take issue with anyone who dared say otherwise. She learned her patriotism from her father, who earned the Bronze Star Medal for valor in the European theater during World War II.

The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, hospice nurses and social workers at MUSC Health Downtown (formerly Providence Hospital) for their loving care and attention. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29425.
