Johnnie Rivers Johnson, 96, entered peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ, surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 19, 2018. Born in and always residing in Chesterfield County, SC, he was the son of the late William Knoxie and Lillie Rivers Johnson. He was a lifelong member of Hebron United Methodist Church, “the church in the wildwood,” where he enjoyed family traditions and singing the old hymns. He loved his family and raised them to love the Lord, respect others, and work hard. He always had a garden and room at his table for one more. Rivers was an entrepreneur running small side industries and was retired from Kendall in Bethune. He was easy-going and always enjoyed life.
Visitation is at Noon on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Norton Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Henson will officiate at the Norton Chapel with burial in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery, McBee, SC. The family will receive friends at the family home after the services. Rivers enjoyed the beauty of flowers and memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Hospice PO Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709, or Hebron United Methodist Church.
Rivers’ living legacy consists of his children: Peggy Query (Bill), Johnnie E. Johnson (Debbie), Sandra Mixon, Eloit Johnson (Linda), Jane Norris (Ray), Bruce Johnson (Anna), Joy Thiele, and Paul Johnson (Cathy); grandchildren “Papa’s Squirrels”: Kim Smith (Ben), April Sherrill (Jeff), Wendy Logan (Warner), Dana Mixon, Neva Lawson (Brooks), Eddie Johnson (Aliza), Whit Norris (Kelly), Natalie Hart (Mike), Tyler Johnson, Emily Johnson, Trent Brown (June), Meg Brown, Kayrn Johnson, and Matthew Johnson, and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: Sammy Johnson (Frances), Donald Johnson (Daphne), Betty Putzey, and Joyce Gibson (Charles).
Rivers was preceded in death by his beautiful, loving wife Sarah Tarlton Johnson, daughter Eleanor Blanche Johnson, and siblings Raymond Johnson, Kathleen Johnson, Othemeade Johnson, Georgina Brown, Verdell Lynch, W. K. Johnson, Earl Johnson, J.H. Johnson, Blanche Newsome, Marjorie Hancock, and Vivian Turbeville.
