John Smith

October 15, 1952 — August 9, 2017

Mister John Douglas “Doug” Smith, 64, of Bishopville, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 9th, 2017, at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

His funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday in Hebron United Methodist Church. Reverend Charles McLendon will officiate with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mister Smith was born in Bishopville, a son of the late James Luther & Mary Elizabeth Skinner Smith. Doug was a friendly person who loved fishing, hunting, and writing. He also served our nation in the United States Air Force. Being a person who was young at heart and got along with all, he was known as “Papa Doug.”

Surviving are his sisters: June Suber and husband, Bill of Chapin, Beth Shirley of Charleston, Becky Canaan and husband, Stuart of Columbia, Joyce Reed of Charleston; brothers: Bill Smith and wife, Jackie of Alabama, Jerry Smith and wife, Sissy of Chapin, and Warren Smith of Charleston.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sarah Mitchell.
