John Coates, Sr

Funeral services for John Wesley Coates, Sr. age 75, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Rev. Danny Holley will officiate. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Coates was born in Hartsville a son of the late James and Frances Kelley Coates. He attended Greater Heights Baptist Church, was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 18 years of service. He loved to watch the chickens in the yard. He was a loving husband, father, papa and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Butch Gainey Coates, Hartsville; four sons, John (Lori) Coates, Jr., Gastonia, N.C., Brian (Wendy) Kelly, Hartsville, Berry Kelly, Hartsville and Brad (Joye) Kelly, Hartsville; one daughter, Alice Coates (Mitch Watford) Funderburk, Hartsville; mother of their son, Carol Coates Martin, Gastonia, N.C.; brother in law, Ed Robinson, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Sam Coates and one sister, Mary Frances Coates Robinson.
