James “Big Jimmy” Donald Steen, 84, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Friday May 29, 2020 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. He was born on May 1, 1936 in Hartsville, South Carolina to the late James Otis & Mary Magdalene (Outlaw) Steen.
Along with his parents, Big Jimmy is reunited in passing with his sister, Louise Greene; and brothers, William & Ervin Steen.
Big Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Army and Navy during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge and return to society he went to work on the loading dock for Sonoco Paper Mill in Hartsville. Upon his well-deserved retirement, Big Jimmy was able to enjoy the finer things in life. He loved spending time with his family and making memories. In his free time and following his family’s relocation to Garden City, he attended Grand Strand Community Church. Big Jimmy will be deeply missed for his love for his family, his quick wit and sense of humor.
Left to cherish Big Jimmy’s memory are his beloved wife, Mary Patsy Steen of Garden City; sons, Donald Steen, of Hartsville, Michael (Nina) Steen of Christmas, FL, Phillip Steen of Maggie Valley, NC, & Bradley Steen of Garden City; daughters, Patrice Ward of Murrells Inlet, Kimberly (Chris) Sturgeon of Darlington, Shannon (Tony Martinez) Steen of Murrells Inlet, & Dianne (Michael) Johnson of Patrick, SC; brother, Tommy (Barbara) Steen of Hartsville; eighteen grandchildren, Mikey, Donald Ray, Sable, Melissa, Dustin Bridgette, Jacob, Corey, Ryan, Parker, Jordan, Faith, Patrick, Oceana, Amanda, Jamie, & Corey; twenty one great-grandchildren; as well as his beloved pet, Daisy; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a large, loving, extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.
A Celebration of Big Jimmy’s life will be held on Tuesday June 2, 2020 at 3:00PM at Grand Strand Community Church, 3820 Holmestown Rd. Myrtle Beach, SC 29588. The family will gather to greet friends one hour prior to service time, starting at 2:00PM.
Big Jimmy will be laid to rest within Florence National Cemetery, on Wednesday June 3, 2020. The time will be announced when finalized.
