Funeral services for James Arthur (Art) Hawkins age 53, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Bobby James and Rev. Rob Brazell will officiate. Burial will be in the Wayside Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Hawkins was born in Bishopville a son of Bertie Brigman Hawkins and the late Charles Hawkins

Art was a 1988 graduate of Bishopville High School. He enlisted into the United States Air Force serving for seven years. Art married his wife Laura in June 1990. He used the skills from his service to pursue his lifelong career in transportation and logistics; he owned and operated Southern Services of the Carolinas for twenty-five years. He was currently employed as a salesman with Anderson Transfer in Sumter, South Carolina. Art was an avid sports fan that loved the Carolina Gamecocks. He could often be found on the baseball field; nothing brought him more joy than coaching baseball. Some of his families’ fondest memories include boating, cruising, and long road trips which often ended with a stop at a minor-league baseball stadium. Art never met a stranger and was a loyal friend to everyone. He was a member of Hampton Lodge 204 and Bishopville Lodge 104. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior as a child.  His greatest joy was his beautiful granddaughter, Josie.

Surviving are his wife, Laura Bender Hawkins, Bishopville; his mother, of Florence; three sons, Wade (Ashley) Hawkins, Florence, Kyle (Macy) Hawkins, Georgetown, GA and Grant Hawkins, Bishopville; one grandchild, Josie Hawkins, Florence; one brother, Chuck (Dana) Hawkins, Bishopville; one sister, Bobbie Jean Robertson, Bishopville.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by, one cousin, Debbie Hawkins; His mother and father in law, Charles and Josephine Bender and one sister in law, Ruth Bender Miller.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Lee Academy Athletics, 630 Cousar Street, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.
