Essie Mae Jordan Davis

Mrs. Essie Mae Davis of Hartsville, SC went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the age of 92. Mrs. Davis was born June 29, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Thomas Mason and Nita Oneal Jordan. She was the last surviving sibling of Thomas and Nita’s 8 children.

She and her late husband, Maxie Davis were the proud owners of the Big M Supermarket for many years. During those years she became friends with all walks of life and developed her love of people. Mrs. Essie, as she was lovingly called by many, worked for 29 years as a greeter at WalMart.  She loved being around people, sharing her infectious smile, and making people feel special. Her famous quote these last years was “I’ve been blessed.” But it was everyone who knew her that were truly the blessed ones.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Jean (David) Miller, of Raleigh, NC. along with  6 grandchildren, Chris (Katie) Miller, Charlotte, NC; Meredith Miller Goose, Huntersville, NC; April Davis Evans, Darlington, SC; Missy (Clint) Davis Stone, Hartsville, SC; Candace (Brett) Davis Parker, Hartsville, SC; Justin Davis, Florence, SC.  Mrs. Essie also had 11 great-grandchildren who will miss her.

She was predecesed by her husband, Edwin Maxie Davis, Sr., her 2 sons, Edwin Maxie (Mackie) Davis, Jr. and James Laban (Jimmy) Davis, as well as her 7 siblings.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Retreat at Carolina Bay for helping her “live her best life” these last 2 years. She told everyone who visited her that she couldn’t be in a better place.

A visitation will be held at Norton Funeral Home on Friday, September 3, 2021 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM, followed by a gravesite service at 2:00 PM at Magnolia Cemetery.
