David Schmitzer

Dave passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, SC after a 3-week battle with pneumonia.

Age 78, Dave was born June 16, 1940 in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late Alvin R. Schmitzer and Jean (Donovan) Schmitzer.

Dave left behind his wife of 52 years, Susan “Sue” (Gleason) Schmitzer; daughter, Amy S. Thomas; son-in-law, Chris Thomas; granddaughters: Abigail “Abby“ Christine Thomas and Margaret “Maggie“ Michael Thomas, all of Hartsville, SC.  His son, Michael Donovan Schmitzer, predeceased Dave in 1990, Rockingham, NC.

Dave is also survived by sisters:  Patricia Poyer of Marshall, Michigan; Barbara Noble of Jackson, Michigan; Martha (Scott) Boehme of Williamston, Michigan; and brother, Richard (Robin) Schmitzer of Manakin, Virginia.

Dave was a 1958 graduate of St. Philip Catholic High School in Battle Creek, Michigan.  He served in the U.S. Army 1963 – 1965 and was a 1967 graduate of Michigan State University.  He was employed as a manufacturing engineer and retired from ZF Industries in Gainesville, GA in 2000.  He had been a resident of Hartsville, SC since 2003.

Services will be announced at a future date by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville.  Any contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.  We wish again to send out many thanks to all our family and friends for their thoughts and prayers for Dave and us throughout recent days.  We will miss him greatly.  “Beloved” is his name.
