Charles Tyner, Sr

Hartsville, S.C. Funeral services for Charles L. Tyner, Sr. age 78, who passed away March 26, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the Kelleytown Baptist Church. Rev. Rod Elliott will officiate. Burial will be in Kelleytown Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday 5-7 pm at the Funeral Home. Charles was born in Hartsville a son of the late Louie & Lila Sellers Tyner. He was a long standing member of Kelleytown Baptist Church, was a member of the Jim Meadows Sunday School Class and a member of the Kelleytown Brotherhood. In his early life he served his church as an Usher as well as a choir member. On several occasions, Mr. Tyner, a loved to play the harmonica and would play old hymns for the congregation, which he loved to do. He was a retired Linesman,working in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia and was retired from Sumter Builders Contractors in Sumter in 1989. For years, after retirement he ran and managed Tyners Diner that was opened in 1939 by his father Louie Tyner as one of Kelleytown Community Stores. Mr. Tyner had a passion for History. He had collected and owned many antiques, his favorite possession a 1949 ford which he drove for the last 35 years of his life including the day of his death for an afternoon spin to see his children and grandchildren. He loved people and was generous with his story telling and jokes, meeting with senior friends usually at Hardees on Sunday evenings after church. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. Surviving are his wife, Delores Hendrix Tyner, Hartsville; daughter Debbie Tyner Johnston; sons, Charles L. (Mary Ann) Tyner, Jr., Donald M. (Debbie) Tyner all of Hartsville; Step-Children, Marie (Eddie) Timmons, Ricky Atkinson and William Daniel Freeman, all of Hartsville; Grandchildren, Kelley & Dustin Tyner, Allison Johnston (Drew) Bennett; Step-Grandchildren. Ginger (Charlie) Hess, Brooke & Teale Timmons, Ryan (Ashley) Atkinson, Taylor & Bryce Atkinson; 7 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Shaw Tyner and a son, Charles Ray Tyner.
