Charles Lee Dampier, age 83, of Hartsville, SC, passed away on December 3, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Charles was born on September 16, 1941 in Lydia, the son of the late Paul Coker Dampier and Winnie Kennington Dampier.
Charles was married for 61 years to his beloved wife, Evelyn Smith Dampier, who shared in his joys and life’s journey. Their bond was a testament to love and commitment. Together, they raised two sons, Chuck and Scott, who were the pride of his life. Charles' legacy lives on through his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Charles had a distinguished career spanning 40 years at Sonoco, where he worked diligently and built lasting friendships with his colleagues. His work ethic and dedication to his profession were remarkable and set an example for all who worked alongside him. He retired with a sense of fulfillment, having contributed greatly to the company and the lives of those around him.
Beyond his work, Charles was a passionate lover of sports. He was an avid fan of football, baseball, NASCAR, and particularly enjoyed golf, and his weekly poker games, which he played for many years with friends and family. His competitive spirit and enthusiasm for the games he loved were infectious, and he found great joy in following his favorite teams and athletes.
Charles was also an active member of his community. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, where he formed deep bonds of fellowship and camaraderie. His involvement in the Hartsville Rescue Squad reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others and serving his community. Charles always believed in giving back and contributing to the well-being of those around him. Charles was known for his warmth, kindness, and dedication to family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and a quiet wisdom that made him a cherished confidant. His presence in the lives of those who knew him will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all those fortunate enough to have known him. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James (Mickie) Dampier, a sister Louise Dampier and great granddaughter Kaegan Dampier. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his two sons, Chuck (Bobbie) Dampier, Scott (Elizabeth) Dampier; his seven grandchildren, Andy (Kristin) Dampier, Anna (Chris) Stanley, Sara Dampier, Brayden Dampier, Naomi Dampier, Davis Dampier and Nathan Dampier, two great-grandchildren, Elijah Dampier and Kingstan Anderson and one brother Mitchell (Barbara) Dampier, two sisters Brenda Smith and Eloise (Donnie) Welch and many extended family members and friends.
His funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, December 7th, 2024, from the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Boyer and Reverend John “Bootsie” Griggs officiating. A committal will follow in Westview Cemetery and the family welcomes friends for a time of visitation on Friday evening, from 5-7 at the funeral home.
