Matt Johnson, known to many as the "Carolina Skipper," passed away on March 31, 2024, in his hometown of Hartsville, SC. He was born on August 22, 1958. Matt's presence touched the lives of many, and his memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
In his lifetime, Matt had a deep passion for boating and saltwater fishing. His love for the sea and adventure earned him the nickname that resonated with all who crossed paths with him. Matt enjoyed strumming his guitar, rooting for the Clemson Tigers, following NASCAR races avidly, and staying informed about global affairs even in times of declining health. His interests were diverse, reflecting a life lived to the fullest.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Ashley Hanback (Ben), and grandson Ridge Hanback of Killen, AL.; his sister Gail Kimbrell of Hartsville; brothers Tony Grant (Denice), Steve Grant, both of Hartsville, and Tinker Johnson (Maxine) also of Hartsville; along with several nieces and nephews.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Paul W. Johnson and Uneeda Tolson Bass.
A visitation to honor Matt's life will take place at Norton Funeral Home and Crematory in Hartsville on April 5, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Service starting at 11:00 AM at the same location. The burial will be held at Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Danny Holley and Rev. Kitral Benton will officiate.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Uncle Bill Johnson, Ron Johnson and Tony Grant for the love and support they gave Matt during his illness, they were a blessing to him.
