Amy Ruth Petty, 63, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 30, 2023, surrounded by those who loved her most. Amy was born in Hartsville, SC, on May 21, 1959, to Ray and Frances Petty. She was a proud member of the 1977 graduating class of Hartsville High School. She loved staying in touch with her classmates and attending class reunions.
As the oldest sister, Amy loved taking care of others and was always busy around the house helping her mom keep things in order and cooking meals. At family gatherings, everyone always looked forward to her sweet tea and macaroni and cheese. Family was extremely important to Amy. She especially adored her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, always trying to make their favorite meal or bake their favorite cookies.
Amy was loved beyond measure by her family and friends. Her smile would light up a room and when you were lucky enough to hear her giggle, it would melt your heart.
Those who knew Amy have described her as inspirational, the sweetest lady, wonderful friend, and an angel on Earth. Some of Amy’s passions were singing in the West Hartsville Baptist Church choir and cheering on the Hartsville Red Fox football team where she and the rest of the Petty crew would listen to games on the radio. She was so looking forward to the upcoming football season and had already determined that it was going to be a great season! Amy was famously known for her birthday card ministry that brought so much joy to others. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she sent hundreds of birthday cards to her friends and family over the years.
The family would like to thank the many, many friends who have helped, loved, and supported us all through these last months. We would especially like to thank Martha Bryant and Judy Armstrong for loving Amy so well. We would also like to thank Danna Coe, for being an incredible caregiver, friend, and a true blessing to our family.
Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jeff and Ruth Abrams, her father, Ray Petty, and her sister Susan McElveen. She is survived by her mother Frances Abrams Petty; Sisters; Beth (Todd) Tyner, Kerry (Steve) Parker; Brother-in-law Ervin McElveen. Nieces and nephews; Jay and Telissa McElveen (Asher and Raleigh), Drew and Blair McElveen (Wyatt and Micah), Jeff McElveen, Mary Catherine, and Philip Fulmer (Hank), Molly and Matt Griffin, Emily and Justin Prewitt, Rebecca and Brad Barwick (Anniston), Katie and Josh Schwartz
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W Carolina Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550.
Services of Remembrance will be held 3:00pm Wednesday at West Hartsville Baptist Church. Pastor Kevin Walters and Dr. Bev Kennedy will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 5:00-7:00pm at Norton Funeral Home.
